Jason Grigsby explains is great clarity the reasons where you would use the different responsive image specification implementations. Of course you could use <picture> but the chances are for most of the implementations you won’t need it.

Browser support for the picture specification is landing and asMarcos Cáceres said, it is time to “go forth and <picture> all the things!

Except you shouldn’t. You shouldn’t <picture> all the things.

But you should start using picture now for responsive images. No reason to wait.
