Introducing Instant Articles

As more people get their news on mobile devices, we want to make the experience faster and richer on Facebook. People share a lot of articles on Facebook, particularly on our mobile app. To date, however, these stories take an average of eight seconds to load, by far the slowest single content type on Facebook. Instant Articles makes the reading experience as much as ten times faster than standard mobile web articles.

This is quite annoying to see that Facebook are going towards the instant articles route. Firstly, it’s being very selective about the publishers they are using. Secondly, although they would have done something like this anyway they are justified based on the speed at which websites load today thanks to poor implementations. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see Facebook open up a Medium style longer writing experience for members as a follow up to this.
